OEM如何管理半导体过时问题?

Rapid changes in the market environment are shortening the lifecycle of many semiconductor SKUs. For example, merger and acquisition activities among semiconductor suppliers are frequent, and this industry consolidation often leads to the elimination of a series of products. At the same time, technological innovation is also accelerating the pace of products moving towards the end of their life cycle (EOL). As chip sizes continue to shrink and operating speeds increase significantly, suppliers are pursuing higher profits and stopping the production of old, low-profit components. These industry changes are prompting suppliers to accelerate the issuance of product change notifications (PCNs) and EOL notifications, and significantly shorten the time interval from the issuance of notifications to the actual date, that is, the lead time (lead time) between the last purchase and the last shipment. These challenges can be effectively addressed through careful planning and procurement strategies, combined with in-depth market forecasts and prudent design decisions. One mitigation strategy is to explore alternatives for expanding production with partners. Adopting a strategy of continuous production, that is, extending the manufacturing process to extend the product life cycle, can avoid expensive redesign costs, thereby effectively extending the service life of the final product. In addition, integrated circuit manufacturers may choose to reduce the production of old parts, but still provide services in the form of "inventory clearance" to meet customer needs without adding additional production costs.By working closely with partners, OEMs can use the same supply chain (wafer foundry, OSAT) tools as original manufacturers to produce semiconductor devices, ensuring that the final product has the same appearance and function as the original device. In this way, even if the original semiconductor components are discontinued, OEMs can continue to obtain the required components, thereby avoiding expensive redesign costs, extending the life of the final product, and maintaining market competitiveness.
